Emerging Markets for Woody Biomass

Overview:
The purpose of this event is to help local businesses, contractors, individuals, agency leaders and community groups identify ways to work together to stimulate new uses of woody biomass that support sustainable land stewardship and forest-based livelihoods.

We have invited several speakers to share their insight and experience with local woody biomass initiatives in other rural communities here in Montana and across the region. By the end of the day, we hope to have one or more concrete ideas to pursue together in 2010.

Background:
The 2009 inaugural Stewardship Summit brought together people working on stewardship across the Seeley, Swan and Blackfoot regions. As a direct result of our meeting, all three watersheds have spent the past year working on a proposal to the Collaborative Forest Landscape Restoration Act for $40M of funding over a ten-year period to support job-creating restoration projects.

The planning committee for this tri-valley collaborative has continued to meet roughly every other month to share information and coordinate actions on shared concern. This planning team has discussed the major changes occurring in the regional and national timber industry, the rapid increase of insect and climate related forest stress, and the decline of family-wage jobs in our rural communities. In light of these factors, we have selected "Emerging Markets for Woody Biomass" as the focus for this year's gathering.
